General Tips:
- At the begining of the game, build 10-15 villagers before you start building troops.
- As soon as you can, build several fishing boats so your villagers can build, chop wood, or mine gold/stone instead of producing food.
- Build watch towers near your port and by enterances to your town. Always build at least two or three together so you won't be outgunned.
- Build a couple of scouts early in the game. It is important to find the enemy before he finds you. You can also use scouts to locate gold mines and other natural resources.
- Never attack a well-protected enemy town with only a few troops unless you want to be slaughtered. Build up a large army, and then you might be able to decimate it.
Siege Defence:
By Mark Stoker (1/25/98)
This will explain how to defend your town when it is under attack by a large army. This is especially useful when you are defending a wonder
(A wonder that is built and held for 2000 years will result in an automatic victory for your civilization).
First of all, you should have your town completely surrounded by large fortified walls. At the begining of the game, if you build your main town in an area that
is surrounded by trees or other natural defences, you may not have to build as many walls. Build a lot of towers, and place them in groups close to your walls.
All this will force your enemies to build large numbers of siege weapons. This can be countered by placing small groups of calvary units outside your walls,
and by using them as siege weapon strike teams.
If you can, upgrade to ballista towers. Ballista towers complimented by archers will be able to pick off any hand-to-hand forces that get near your walls.
The Assyrians have an advantage here because their archers have a +40% fire rate.
Priests are also a good defence against invading armies. If they are placed behind your walls, they can easily convert enemy troops and give you forces outside your walls.
If your civilization is Egyptian or Choson, using priests is an especially effective defence (Egyptian priests have a +3 range; Choson priests cost -30%).
Minoan Sea Dominance:
By GUS427 (4/10/98)
If you're playing on a water map pick the minoans. Their fishing ships only
cost 34 wood, 69 wood for trading ships, and only 94 for war ships (scout
ships, war galleys etc). Make 5 fishing ships and have all your villagers
get wood except for 4( have 2 get gold and 2 get stone). Make as many war ships
as you can and 2 out of every 3 send to attack the enemy's dock. Once you have
the dock destroyed, put a ship gaurding every inch of the coastline. The
enemy will have to aviod building near water and will put them way behind. This
also prevents the building of a wonder,if you do a good job, and you won't have
to worry about any kind of attack. If you like buiding wonders there will be
no worries of losing. Sea dominance can win you the game even if you don't have
much of a land army.
Yamato Cavalry Rush:
By Mark Stoker (3/16/98)
The Yamato are an extremely dangerous tribe. Because the Yamato have reduced-cost cavalry, the cavalry rush is a very effective strategy.
If you decide to use this strategy, it is important to get to Bronze Age as fast as possible. But before you reach the Bronze Age, you should have at least three stables,
and you should locate the enemy using scouts. Also, start mining gold BEFORE you reach the Bronze Age. As soon as you reach Bronze, start sending
cavalry at the enemy in groups of 4-6, but continue to train new units and get the cavalry upgrades while you are attacking. At first, ignore all military units and go after villagers. This will disrupt his production.
The villagers might try to run away, but your cavalry are much faster. Then you can start attacking military units. Send in the new units that you have been training to help out. If you
keep attacking the enemy, you will keep him on defense, and he will have no chance to gather resources and attack you. Eventually, he will probably run out of resources and you will win.
Yamato/Assyrian Villagers:
By GUS427 (5/07/98)
Choose either the Assyrian or the Yamato (thier villagers are 30% faster
than normal). Research the wheel, and that'll make your villagers 30% faster on
top of the other 30%. Get Architecture and that cuts building time 30%. Then
get the upgrade from the temple that gives you faster and stronger villagers (Jihad).
Once you have all of that you can get, start building towers around enemy
cities. Then just keep building the towers closer and closer. If you do this
right, send in almost all of your army units. This attack will create havok
in an enemy city. During the attack build towers inside his city. From this
point on your enemy will be too worried to make an attack on your city so build
up your walls. Then from there just keep attacking, You should be able to
eliminate his city by now. If not you probably did so much damage that your
enemy will pretty much give up.
Suprise Attacks:
By Mark Stoker (1/25/98)
When you are attacking a well-defended enemy base with a large army, this trick might work a few times.
Divide you army into a large group, and a small group of about 8 units, and place them at opposite ends of the enemy base. Send the small group into the enemy town.
Attack a few units, and then withdraw when the enemy notices you. Hopefully, the enemy will think that these 8 soldiers are your entire army, and he will send most his units after them.
This will leave his base unprotected. Send your large group into the base and destroy as much as you can before the enemy returns.
You might even want to send in a few villagers to build towers inside the enemy's walls.
